Things to carry

This is just a list of things that you should carry while trekking. It is neither the master list not the list of must carry items. This is just a list of recommended items. Further, the list can be modified based on type of trek, land topography facilities already available and weather conditions

I have divided the list of things in various sub-categories.

Trekking gear

  • Bags (1 rucksack of 50-70 litres and 1 small bag of 20 litres)
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping mat
  • Tent
  • Thermal flask (steel body)

Walking stick/pole

  • Clothing and shoes
    1 pair of good trekking shoes (water proof and good ankle support)
  • 1 pair of shocks for each day
  • Floaters
  • Cargo, trekking pant
  • T-shirts
  • Raincoat/Poncho
  • Wind cheater
  • Jacket according to weather condition
  • Towels (preferably made of microfiber or cotton, prefer thinner one)
  • Handkerchief – 2
  • Undergarments (1 for each day)
  • Thermal layer
  • Sun glasses (class 4 for snow trek)
  • Waterproof gaiters
  • Monkey cap/sun hat

Personal care

  • Tooth brush and paste
  • Paper soap and liquid soap
  • Moisturizer and suns cream
  • sanitizer
  • Boroplus or Boroline
  • Zeoline or chlorine tablets for water cleaning


  • Arrange medicine for Fever (paracetamol), Body pain and headache, pain killer, diarrhoea, food infection, dysentery, nausea, mountain sickness
  • First aid kit including Savlon/Dettol, scissors, cotton, bandage, band aids, antiseptic cream, crepe bandage

Food and beverages

  • Water (at least 2l)
  • Bread, butter and peanuts/nuts
  • Chocolates
  • Energy drink
  • Glucose
  • Some fruits
  • Chewing gums and candies

Photography and Other equipment

  • Camera/battery/charger/memory card
  • Torch/headlamp
  • GPS/ compass/maps
  • Army/Swiss knife
  • Lighter
  • Para cord

Additional items* (only for independent camping in uninhibited terrains-not required otherwise )

  • Camping Stove with Fuel Tablets – could be hired
  • Cooking and serving Utensils – could be hired
  • Maggi Dal/Sambar Atta Noodles
  • Ready-2-Cook food of your choice
  • Tomato Ketchup & Mustard Sachets
  • Dates, Dry fruits & Nuts
  • Small sachets of Sugar, Common Salt & Pepper,
  • Butter (small) & Mix Fruit Jam (sachets)
  • Whole Wheat Bread/Buns (you get this at German bakeries)
  • Marie Biscuits
  • Vegit Aloo Mash powder (instant, tasty, rich carb food — 0% fat)
  • Milk powder
  • Bru Ice cappacino sachets or MTR instant Badam mix
  • Tea Bags

Always carry a garbage bag/poly bag. Do not litter
